Ways to Practice Safe ATM Transactions

ATM fraud is becoming more common, and unfortunately, scammers are getting more creative with the ways they try to steal personal information and money. Whether you’re withdrawing cash, checking your balance, or paying at a gas pump, it’s important to stay alert and protect your financial information. The good news is that a few simple habits can go a long way in keeping your account safe.

Skimming

One of the first things you should do before using an ATM is inspect the machine carefully. Criminals sometimes install “skimming” devices designed to steal card information. Watch for bulky keypads, loose card slots, electrical tape, fresh glue, or plastic pieces that look out of place. If something doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and avoid using that ATM.

Check for Cameras

It’s also important to check for hidden cameras. Tiny pinhole cameras can be used to record your PIN as you type it in. Legitimate security cameras are usually visible and mounted farther away for safety purposes. To add another layer of protection, always cover the keypad with your free hand when entering your PIN.

Look for People Seating Around You

Be aware of your surroundings as well. If someone is lingering nearby with a laptop, tablet, or cellphone for an unusual amount of time, they may be attempting to collect information electronically or watch transactions. If you ever feel uncomfortable, leave and find another ATM location.

Don't Share Your Pin

Your PIN is one of the most important pieces of financial information you have, so never share it with anyone unless absolutely necessary. Avoid storing your PIN in your wallet or saving it in your phone. If you must write it down, keep it in a secure place away from your debit card.

When choosing an ATM, stick to well-lit and busy locations. Drive-up ATMs connected to banks or located in public areas are often safer than isolated machines. On the other hand, ATMs located in tourist-heavy areas or shopping centers can sometimes attract thieves because of the high volume of users.

If an ATM malfunctions or your card gets stuck, don’t accept help from strangers. Instead, go directly to the nearest bank branch or contact your financial institution for assistance.

Remember that fraud isn’t limited to ATMs. Gas station card readers, point-of-sale terminals, and other payment devices can also be tampered with. Whenever possible, run your debit card transaction as “credit” instead of “debit.” This allows you to sign rather than enter a PIN that could be observed by someone nearby.

Monitor Your Account

Finally, monitor your checking account regularly and report suspicious activity immediately. The sooner unusual transactions are reported, the faster your credit union or bank can help protect your account.

Staying aware and taking a few extra precautions can make a huge difference in protecting yourself from fraud and keeping your finances secure.
