Supporting New Teachers, Empowering Students: The Impact of the Rio Grande Credit Union Partnership
Starting a new school year is always a mix of excitement and challenge—especially for new teachers setting up their first classrooms. Often, they are faced with bare walls, empty shelves, and limited budgets. That’s where the support of the community, including generous partners like Rio Grande Credit Union, makes a powerful difference.
New teachers frequently invest their own money to provide basic supplies such as notebooks, pencils, crayons, tissues, dry-erase markers, and organizational materials. These essential items create a welcoming, functional environment where students can focus, stay engaged, and thrive. Without them, classrooms lack the tools necessary for effective teaching and learning.
The New Teachers Supply Drive, ensures new teachers receive the foundational materials they need to start strong. Thanks to the ongoing support of RGCU, the APS new teachers can start the school year with a fully stocked classroom. Teachers are invited to "shop" at no cost, relieving a financial burden and sending a message that the community values their role in shaping young lives.
“Every pencil, notebook, and glue stick represent more than a school supply—it’s an investment in a child’s education,” said Shannon Barnhill, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Rio Grande Credit Union has been an incredible partner in making sure our new teachers don’t walk into empty classrooms. Their commitment helps create spaces where students feel prepared, confident, and ready to learn.”
The partnership’s impact reaches beyond the classroom walls. When teachers feel supported, they’re more likely to stay in the profession, which promotes stability and consistency for students. When students have the supplies they need, it removes barriers to participation and academic success.
Thanks to the generosity of Rio Grande Credit Union (RGCU) members and leadership, this initiative continues to grow in reach and impact. Together, we are building a stronger future—one classroom, one student, one school year at a time.
