Watch Out for Baby Formula Scams

With the current high demand for baby formula, scammers have developed new ways to prey on people. They do this by setting up fake websites or social media profiles with well-known logos of formula brands, and trick people into thinking they are buying formula directly from companies’ official websites. Desperate parents and caregivers are being duped into paying steep prices for baby formula that never arrives.

Here are some tips to keep you from falling victim to a baby formula scam:

Check out the company

The FTC has a great site that will help you search companies or products. This is especially helpful for online shopping. You can also comparison shop, read reviews, and check on the terms of a deal.

Consider your payment type

Credit Cards give you the best protection. It creates an automatic “paper trail,” which means you can request a refund if you get scammed. RGCU card members also have benefits such as purchase security and price protection. Where people get in trouble is if they use gift cards, money transfers, or cryptocurrency. These are usually signs of a scam.

Search local resources

Don’t be afraid to call your pediatrician for advice. They often get samples of different formulas and may be able to help. There are also assistance programs such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) that may be able to help you find formula.

If you suspect a scam, report it to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your report helps the FTC and law enforcement identify and stop scammers.
